Gestational diabetes is a condition that is relatively common in pregnancy. When gestational diabetes is properly diagnosed, it can often be managed so that the mother and baby suffer no ill effects from the condition. However, when gestational diabetes goes untreated or undiagnosed, the following complications may arise:

Complications for the Mother

A woman who develops gestational diabetes is at greater risk of developing urinary tract infections and preeclampsia. Preeclampsia can be fatal if left untreated. Women with gestational diabetes should also be aware that they have an increased likelihood of developing gestational diabetes in subsequent pregnancies and of developing Type 2 Diabetes later in life.

Complications for the Baby

When gestational diabetes is not appropriately diagnosed or treated, the baby is at significant risk of birth injuries. In early pregnancy, gestational diabetes can lead to serious birth defects in important organs such as the heart and brain. It can also lead to miscarriage.

In later pregnancy, many gestational diabetes birth injuries are caused because untreated diabetes can cause the baby to be larger than usual. Large babies are at increased risk for difficult deliveries, shoulder dystocia, and Erb's Palsy. Fetal distress from a prolonged labor and emergency C-sections are also possible and present their own risks. After birth, a baby may be at risk of having low blood sugar.

If you or your baby has suffered complications from undiagnosed or untreated gestational diabetes then you may be entitled to damages.
