Severe Newborn Jaundice

Jaundice is the accumulation of bilirubin in the blood (hyperbilirubinemia) of a newborn infant leading to the symptoms of jaundice which include yellowing of the skin, the whites of the eyes, and of mucous membranes. It is malpractice if severe newborn jaundice is allowed to progress untreated or is treated improperly. No treatment or improper treatment can result in the newborn suffering permanent brain damage.
