A Review of 2010 Fatal Occupational Injury Statistics in New York and around the Country

Recently, the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) released preliminary information about 2010 fatal workplace injuries. While the final information won't be available until the spring of 2012, it is important to consider what is known about recent workplace fatalities so that appropriate actions can be taken to protect construction workers.

A Look at the Overall Numbers for the United States, New York and New York City

4,547 people died from United States occupational injuries in 2010. In New York and New York City, work accident deaths remained approximately the same as they did in 2009. In 2010, 182 people died in New York workplace accidents compared with 185 people in 2009. In New York City alone, there were 68 work related fatalities in 2010 compared to 63 in 2009. The 2010 New York occupational fatalities included:
  • 54 transportation related accidents
  • 45 assaults or acts of violence
  • 31 incidents of contact with objects
  • 28 falls
  • 15 cases of exposure to harmful substances
  • 8 fires or explosions

A Closer Look at the Construction Industry

While fewer construction workers lost their lives last year and fewer families are left to mourn their losses, construction fatalities remain an issue. 751 people died in private construction related accidents last year. The construction industry continues to have more fatal injuries than other industries in the country, despite a significant drop in the number of hours worked by construction workers in recent years.
