In a dramatic turn of events, a new study has found that SUVs are no longer the type of vehicle most likely to roll over. Just over a decade ago, SUVs had the highest rollover rate as compared to all other vehicles.* Approximately 36% of fatal SUV crashes were rollover accidents in 2000.

Now, the risk has changed thanks to technological developments. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) recently released a study that looked at rollover statistics from 2006 -2009.* Surprisingly, IIHS found that fatality rates for SUV drivers were about 50% lower than for drivers of other types of vehicles.

Are Rollover Accidents Still a Risk?

While the risk of SUV rollover accidents has decreased dramatically, rollover accidents remain a very real risk for drivers of all types of vehicles. Rollover crashes may result in significant injuries such as traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, amputations and even death.

The risk can be minimized by driving a vehicle with electronic stability control, traveling at appropriate speeds, properly loading vehicles, and maintaining tires. However, the risk cannot be completely eliminated.
